BEST FISHING OUTSIDE GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

The Best Fishing Outside Glacier National Park

One of the best things about fishing is that it can be as relaxing or as exciting as you want it to be. Whether you're looking for peace and quiet on the water or something to really get your heart pumping – no angler wants to deal with crowded shores or busy waters.

While Glacier National Park, the crown jewel of the Montana wilderness, does offer some incredible fishing, it also comes with incredible crowds. The Montana wilderness is vast, and it’s easy to find quiet solitude – and great fishing – if you know where to look.

In this article, we’ll share some of our favorite secluded fishing spots outside Glacier National Park, as well as provide some practical tips to ensure you have a successful fishing trip.

The Best Places to Fish Outside of Glacier National Park

North Fork Flathead River

The North Fork of the Flathead River, roughly defining Glacier National Park’s western border, is a haven for anglers looking for a quiet spot on the river. Fishing on the North Fork offers the majestic views of Glacier National Park without the crowds and strict fishing regulations. The North Fork’s crystal-clear waters are full of rainbow, cutthroat, and bull trout, all eager to test your skills.

Middle Fork Flathead River

While the North Fork of the Flathead River flows south from Canada, the Middle Fork of the Flathead River starts closer to home in the depths of the Flathead National Forest, south of Glacier National Park. This wild and scenic river is accessible anywhere from Hungry Horse to West Glacier and beyond. The Middle Fork has a reputation for producing trophy trout, providing fishermen not only with a challenge but with plenty of wide open spaces, peace, and quiet.

Hungry Horse Reservoir

Despite its size, Hungry Horse Reservoir is easy to overlook if you’re traveling to the area for the first time. Tucked in the middle of towering mountains almost directly south of Glacier National Park, this reservoir typically doesn’t make the list when tourists plan their vacations – which is great news for you. Lake trout, kokanee salmon, and bull trout all thrive here in this secluded reservoir.

Swan Lake

Swan Lake, a tranquil haven surrounded by lush greenery, offers a serene escape for fly fishing and boat fishing enthusiasts. Bull trout, cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout abound in the lake's depths, providing ample opportunities for anglers to cast their lines and experience the thrill of the catch.

Flathead Lake

Flathead Lake, the final destination for both the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Flathead River, is absolutely teeming with diverse fish species – exactly what you’d expect from Montana’s largest natural lake. Lake trout, rainbow trout, and bull trout patrol the lake’s depths, offering angles a variety of challenges and rewards along with 185 miles of shoreline to explore.

Practical Tips for Fishing Success Outside Glacier National Park

Now that you know where you’re going, here’s a quick review to make sure you know what you’re doing.

Get Your Montana Fishing License

Montana requires a base fishing license for all anglers, with additional licenses or permits required for specific areas or to target fish species. Before you cast your line, check out Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks website or at licensed vendors.

Respect Fishing Regulations and Leave No Trace Principles

Adhering to local fishing regulations is paramount for conserving Montana’s aquatic resources. Familiarize yourself with the specific regulations for the areas you plan to fish, including size and bag limits, seasonal restrictions, and gear restrictions.

Practice responsible fishing techniques that minimize environmental impact. Follow the Leave No Trace principles to protect the natural beauty of Montana’s waters and surrounding landscapes. Pack out all your trash, including fishing line, bait containers, and food waste. Leave natural areas undisturbed and respect wildlife.
